Stanford's 3-and-out was their first of the season in the first quarter.

Washington takes early lead

The Huskies strike first as Jake Browning finds Dante Pettis for a three-yard touchdown to give Washington a 6-0 lead over Stanford.

Stanford athletic director Bernard Muir and LA Clippers owner Steve Ballmer -- former Microsoft CEO -- chat on the sidelines before Stanford--Washington kickoff. Ballmer, despite his long Seattle history, is in Stanford gear because he went to business school there.

While Stanford being down two starting cornerbacks is a big pregame story for Washington QB Jake Browning, that angle also plays to Stanford QB Ryan Burns. This is only his second road start and the Huskies own the Pac-12's best defense. At least that was the preseason story. Burns and the Cardinal offense struggled most of the game at UCLA last week until making a clutch drive to take a late lead.

Stanford at Washington tonight on ESPN Radio. Stanford is w/out their top two CB's in Meeks and Holder but talking to DC Lance Anderson he said all they lose is a little size. Nothing more. Should be a good one.

Pac-12 commissioner Larry Scott and his wife Cybille pose with Harry the Husky, though of course the Scotts are neutral parties with Stanford in town. Scott went to Harvard by the way.

The Pac-12 has three live mascots (including Stanford...). Here's Washington's Dubs, giving a high five during a pregame event.

All around town in Baton Rouge, there are signs thanking former LSU coach Les Miles, who was fired Sunday after winning 114 games, two SEC championships and one national championship.

You'd be hard pressed to find a more unique tailgate scene in the Pac-12. Boaters find their way into Lake Washington and then the grilling and drinking begins.

The Huskies' mascot Dubs' best trick: He's asked whether he'd prefer to be a Washington State Cougar or a dead dog. Dubs howls and plays dead (and is then told by his handlers "Good boy!").

The NCAA's new "interpretation" of the definition of a helmet's crown is, in effect, a midseason rules change, since the crown had been so vaguely defined before. Now, officials should call targeting on any helmet-to-helmet hit initiated from any area above the top of the facemask to the top of the helmet.

Washington fan Roger Anderson's RV celebrates the Huskies many Rose Bowl berths. You might notice that it's been a while since he added a leaf to his rose (2001). Thus the hope of taking a step toward that tonight against Stanford.

Ivan Maisel ESPN Senior Writer

Tonight's game may be a referendum on what kind of schedule to play in September. No. 7 Stanford has beaten three Power 5 teams -- Kansas State, USC and UCLA. No. 10 Washington has opened with Rutgers, Idaho, FCS Portland St., and Arizona. That foursome is a collective 3-8 against FBS opponents, 0-6 vs. Power 5 teams.

Sports Center on the road for Stanford-WASHINGTON. Jay Crawford said someone came by to take his order!

Dawgs walking the field! Very cool!

Pregame at Husky Stadium and it certainly is the best view from a press box that I've ever seen. Lake Washington to the right, UW's campus to the left.
