Miami defensive tackle Pat Bethel believes being a legacy player at Miami means much more. His dad, Randy, won two national championships with the Canes and that tradition is something well understood. "When your father is somebody you look up to, it's easy to see how a kid would be like, 'I want to follow in his footsteps, but that legacy here is a little bit different, and I can tell. I'm not just saying that because I'm here. You may go to wherever and play because your dad played but when you come here and play at the place where your dad played, it's a little different. It's something you can feel."

Tennessee defensive back Todd Kelly Jr. has been a lifelong Vols fan thanks to his dad, who played for the team in the 1990s, and is now one of four legacy teammates preparing for the 2017 season. "We all realize it must be a special place if your family members came here and you decided to come here as well," he said. "We were not pressured into it, but decided to play here just because we genuinely wanted to. I think that's something we can all agree on, and that just tells you how special this place is. We all wanted to come here and continue the family legacy and tradition of making Tennessee a better place every day."
