Florida State coach Jimbo Fisher isn't sure whether a tough opener helps or hurts in the playoff era but he thinks about it a lot. He said scheduling is about money and exposure some, but it should primarily about "what [schedule] gets me to the playoff and national championship game."

There isn't much clarity in the secondary in Florida State's depth chart for Ole Miss. The Seminoles have a lot of blue-chip defensive backs, but they're looking to find the right combination. The biggest battle is at cornerback between sophomores Marcus Lewis and Tarvarus McFadden.

Preseason All-American center Pat Elflein estimates he's at "85 or 90 percent" strength as he recovers from offseason shoulder surgery, but it won't keep the Ohio State captain off the field Saturday against Bowling Green. "I'm strong enough to go out there and do what I need to do," Elflein said.

Greg Ostendorf ESPN Staff Writer

Ole Miss safety Tony Conner, who said last week he's at 90 percent, is listed as the first-team Nickel on defense. "Him at 90 percent makes us a lot better," Hugh Freeze said. Conner could still be limited in certain situations when the Rebels play Florida State next Monday (8 pm ET, ESPN).

Smart says the quarterback situation should sort itself out over the next couple of days. Right now Jacob Eason and Greyson Lambert are taking the most reps. They've out-performed Brice Ramsey of late but Ramsey has done well. Smart adds that he isn't concerned with possibly starting Eason as a true freshman. "I have no reservations about a guy's age. If he's old enough to play, he's old enough to start."

New Virginia Tech coach Justin Fuente announced another classy gesture in continuing Frank Beamer's legacy at the school. Each week, a special teams player will wear Beamer's No. 25 as a tribute to the groundbreaking work he did with that unit during his Virginia Tech career. "When opposing coaches and fans hear the term Hokies, the first thing that pops into many of their minds is blocked punts and big plays in the kicking game," Fuente said. "Coach Beamer revolutionized the college game by putting such a priority on special teams. With his blessing, we'll honor a player every week and pay homage to the tradition of excellence at Virginia Tech."

Georgia coach Kirby Smart says that Nick Chubb has been cleared to play (knee) against UNC. He added that Chubb won't necessarily be on a "pitch count" this weekend with his carries. Backup Sony Michel (fractured forearm) has been practicing, but "He hasn't been cleared to tackle live." Smart added that Michel's situation is being monitored "day-to-day."
