The last truly football significant Army-Navy game was 1963. Navy was ranked #2 in the nation. Army was 7-2. After President Kennedy's death the weeks of the game the contest was going to be cancelled, but Jaqueline Kennedy insisted it be played. It was postponed a week to December 7. Army was driving late with no timeouts and twice convinced officials to pause the clock and ask the raucous crowd to quiet down. Still, time ran out and Navy prevailed 21-17, dedicating the victory to Navy WWII veteran JFK.

If Lamar Jackson wins the Heisman, he would be the seventh winner to lose his final 2 games before the ceremony, and the first since Tim Brown in 1987.

My favorite Army-Navy story is from 1948. Army was 8-0, Navy 8-0. Unheralded Midshipman Bill Hawkins scored twice and batted down a late pass by Army legend QB Arnie Galiffa to preserve a 21-21 tie. There was a coin flip to see who would take the game ball home, which Army won but the following week it arrived in Annapolis via mail with a note: "This ball should be in your trophy case, not ours."

ESPN Stats and Information

Lamar Jackson is the 3rd player in FBS history to record 30 passing touchdowns and 20 rushing touchdowns in a single season. The other two players (Cam Newton and Tim Tebow) went on to win the Heisman.

The hero of 1970 Army-Navy Game was Navy defensive back Mark Schickner, who had a record four interceptions, including the game-sealer in the red zone to ice the 11-7 win. I met him years ago and he recalled: "Before the game, our coach told us we'd have to come up with four interceptions to win the game. After the game he said, well, didn't think one guy would get 'em all!"

Cincinnati is hiring Ohio State defensive coordinator Luke Fickell as its next coach, sources tell ESPN. The two sides reached an agreement late last night, and an official announcement from Cincinnati is expected shortly. Fickell has coached at his alma mater since 2002, and served as Ohio State's head coach in 2011, following Jim Tressel's resignation.
