Cameras often show Tom Herman kissing his players before games. Here he is planting one on his wife, Michelle, after a 42-14 win over UConn.

Nic Shimonek is 11 of 14 for 190 yards and three scores in relief of Patrick Mahomes, who remains out after taking a shoulder hit late in the third quarter. No decline at all for Texas Tech, which leads 48-19. But make no mistake, this offense is built for Mahomes. Tech is a different team without him -- and the schedule grows more difficult from here. No word is yet available on the severity of the junior quarterback's injury.

USC coach Clay Helton was good-spirited when asked about the "noise" that has come as a result of the Trojans' 1-3 start. "I know the expectations of SC and I'm a realist," he said. "We're in a production-based business, if you don't win, especially at this level, there's going to be griping and it's well-deserved."

How about that KU defense? Texas Tech lost a bit of its offensive edge with a 14-0 lead, but credit the Jayhawks -- big hits and they're getting after Mahomes. The Jayhawks got three consecutive stops, including an interception by Fish Smithson and a safety on a botched punt. It's 14-2 in Lubbock.

No slowing down Houston's Ward Jr.
