Cougars falling just short in losses

BYU's Friday night loss at Boise was by one point. The Cougars' four defeats this season have come via an excruciating average margin of just 2.0 points. Flipping the field

Boise State has to feel fortunate to escape with a win. It was better than BYU for most of the game, but to lose the turnover battle by five is nearly always a recipe for a loss. Arkansas State managed to overcome a minus-5 turnover margin to beat Georgia Southern earlier this season, but the Broncos win marks just the ninth time in the last 240 games, dating back to 2004, that a team has overcome that turnover deficit.

Boise State survived a wild sequence to beat BYU 28-27 and remain in prime position to represent the Group of 5 in a New Year's Six bowl game. The Broncos blocked BYU's attempt at a game-winning field goal with 15 seconds left, but because it was second down, the kick didn't reach the line of scrimmage and BYU recovered, the Cougars kept the ball. Their second life didn't help, as a pair of incompletions followed, including a tipped Hail Mary on the game's final play.

Blocked FG helps Boise State hang on for win

David Moa blocks Rhett Admond's 44-yard attempt on second down with 15 seconds left. BYU retained possession, a Hail Mary failed, and Boise State won 28-27.

Long pass leads to Boise go-ahead TD

Brett Rypien hits Jake Knight on a crossing route for a 46-yard gain to BYU's 4-yard line. Jeremy McNichols ran in on the next play to put Boise State back ahead 28-27 with 10:37 to play.

Boise State is minus-5 in turnovers tonight against BYU, yet still holds a 28-27 lead in the fourth quarter. Since 2004, FBS teams that are minus-5 in turnovers in a game are just 8-231.

Great grab sets up BYU touchdown

Taysom Hill threads the needle to a diving Mitchell Juergens, who was ruled down six inches short of the end zone with a 33-yard gain. Hill's one-yard run on the next play put BYU back ahead of Boise State 24-21 in the third quarter.

BYU's fake punt on fourth-and-19 from its own 5-yard line went … well, it did not go well. Punter Jonny Linehan made it out of the end zone, but was tackled before reaching the line of scrimmage. BYU coach Kalani Sitake offered the following explanation before going to the locker room at halftime: "Well, on film we thought we had it. We wanted to be aggressive. We came to win the game and it just didn't work out. They made a great adjustment – something that we haven't seen in prior games. But we wanted to be aggressive and it didn't hurt us. Our defense had our backs."
