Virginia coach Bronco Mendenhall gave a nod to Duke's approach against Louisville, when the Blue Devils decided to milk the play clock as much as possible to keep the ball away from Lamar Jackson. It nearly worked. "That gives us the best chance, a similar approach," Mendenhall said.

Virginia has provided a tough challenge to Louisville in the two years they've played in the ACC, winning in 2014 and losing by a touchdown in 2015. Though coach Bronco Mendenhall wasn't a part of those games, he's heard his players discuss the success they've had against the Cards going into their game Saturday. "I was not a part of it, but to the players it's real," Mendenhall said. "I will do everything I can to build the momentum off that."

Week 9 in the ACC: What to watch for

Clemson-Florida State is obviously of interest, but Virginia Tech's visit to Pitt on Thursday night might matter quite a bit in the Coastal Division.

UVa OC: Hazing lawsuit 'blindsided all of us'

Virginia offensive coordinator Robert Anae said the lawsuit filed this week by a former player alleging he was bullied by teammates "came out of nowhere."

Since allowing 34 points in a loss to Virginia Tech two weeks ago, North Carolina has given up a combined 27 points in wins over Miami and Virginia (note: one of those TDs against the Cavaliers was on a fake field goal). That marks their best effort over a two-game stretch this season. North Carolina still needs Virginia Tech to lose to get the upper-hand in the Coastal, but it appears the Tar Heels defense has turned a corner.

Trubisky throws third TD pass

Mitch Trubisky finds Austin Proehl in stride for a 46-yard score as North Carolina answers a Virginia touchdown. The Tar Heels lead 35-14 midway through the fourth quarter.

Virginia cuts into Tar Heels lead

Taquan Mizzell finds a hole in the defense for a 1-yard TD run early in the fourth quarter. The Tar Heels maintain a 28-14 over the Cavaliers.

North Carolina has hit its stride on offense, scoring touchdowns on consecutive drives in the third quarter to take a 28-7 lead on Virginia. The Tar Heels started a revamped offensive line because of injuries to multiple starters, but Elijah Hood already has over 100 yards rushing and Mitch Trubisky has had plenty of time to throw.

Tar Heels extend lead over Virginia

Mitch Trubisky throws a strike to a wide open Thomas Jackson to give No. 22 North Carolina a 21-7 lead over Virginia.

Tricky Tar Heels take the lead

UNC QB Mitch Trubisky lines up wide, takes the pitch and throws a 40-yard TD pass to Bug Howard. No. 22 UNC leads Virginia 14-7.

If you like trick plays, tune in to North Carolina-Virginia. First, Virginia scored on a fake field goal when Matt Johns hit Evan Butts for the 11-yard TD. On the next drive, North Carolina quarterback Mitch Trubisky lined up wide, took the pitch and threw a 40-yard touchdown pass to Bug Howard.

Virginia runs unusual fake to perfection

The Cavaliers lined up for a field goal, but switched into an unorthodox formation that allowed for Matt Johns to throw an 11-yard TD pass to Evan Butts.

Earlier this week, North Carolina coach Larry Fedora said he hoped his defense would use its performance in a win over Miami as a springboard for confidence and momentum. Through a little more than a quarter against Virginia, the D has allowed just two first downs and 63 total yards.

Watch: No. 22 North Carolina at Virginia

North Carolina and Virginia meet for the 121st time in "the South's Oldest Rivalry." The Tar Heels have won six straight in the series and are 12-point road favorites. Live on ACCNetworkExtra/WatchESPN

North Carolina put on upset watch

The No. 22 Tar Heels have beaten FSU, Pitt and Miami by a combined 10 points. If Virginia avoids turnovers at home, it could be another close call for UNC. GameDay Kickoff
