USC coach Clay Helton didn't bite when asked if he expected to be in the Rose Bowl after finishing behind Colorado in the Pac-12 South standings. "It's another group's job to decide where you fall," he said, "and you hope you've done enough to put yourself in a good light and have the opportunity at a Rose Bowl.

Pac-12 in final College Football Playoff rankings: 4. Washington; 9. USC; 10. Colorado; 18. Stanford; 19. Utah. So Washington won title in conference with three top-10 teams and five in top-20. With USC in Rose Bowl, that means conference will divide a $10 million payout between its 12 teams. Fair to say the conference was top-heavy more than deep this year. Six teams with eight or more wins — Washington State at 8-4 -- but those were the only bowl eligible teams.

Colorado finishes No. 10 but won't be headed to the New Year's Six. Still, an exceptional season from Mike MacIntyre and the Buffaloes that no one -- outside of Boulder -- saw coming.

Pac-12 in the final CFP rankings: 4. Washington, 9. USC, 10. Colorado, 18. Stanford, 19. Utah

As expected, USC jumped Colorado in the committee's rankings and will play Penn State in the Rose Bowl. The Buffaloes will be disappointed, but a 31-point loss to Washington in the Pac-12 title game combined with a head-to-head loss to USC justified the decision.

Ted Miller ESPN Staff Writer

Intent DOES matter in nonconference scheduling. As in: if a team scheduled Texas, Notre Dame or Michigan State this year, would it get credit for solid nonconference scheduling? Yes. Obviously, Washington scheduling Rutgers is not an apples-to-apples comparison, but the Scarlet Knights are a Power 5 team, and when the game was scheduled in 2014 they were coming off an 8-5 season with a bowl win -- their fourth consecutive bowl appearance. They also opened that 2014 campaign with a win over Washington State in Seattle. It's not fair to blame the Huskies for Rutgers collapse, and the CFP committee didn't.

No. 8 Colorado lost by 31 points to No. 4 Washington in the Pac-12 championship game. If No. 11 USC finishes higher than the Buffaloes in the final poll, the Trojans will be Rose Bowl bound. GameDay Final
