Are the Vols, Bears and Badgers for real?

Did Tennessee turn a corner? Can Wisconsin make a B1G title run? Is Baylor the Big 12's best? We look at these Week 4 questions and more to determine if they're real or if we're imagining things.

September provides CFP answers but leaves questions, too

The season's first month taught us that Bama is still the best, Louisville is legit and Houston has hope, but heading into October, there are lingering College Football Playoff questions.

Coaching winners and losers from Week 4

Gus Malzahn got a huge win -- at the expense of fellow hot-seat staple Les Miles -- while Clay Helton saw his season continue spiraling downward. Plus, what Bobby Petrino's next move should be.

ESPN Stats and Information

Notre Dame, USC both have three losses. This is the second time in the last 50 years both have had three losses before October (also 2001).

What a finish in Salt Lake City, where No. 24 Utah came back to beat USC 31-27. With under a minute to go and facing fourth-and-1 from the USC 23-yard line, Utah could have sent out All-American kicker Andy Phillips to tie the game, but coach Kyle Whittingham elected to go for it. The Utes picked up the first down and QB Troy Williams hit WR Tim Patrick for an 18-yard game-winning touchdown on the next play. USC led by 14 early in the second half and with the loss, falls to 1-3 on the season. Utah remains undefeated at 4-0.

In addition to the breakout performance from Sam Darnold, it's a good sign for USC that Darreus Roger is having another strong performance. He came up with a pair of key grabs to help extend a drive late in the third quarter and have five catches for 58 yards through three quarters. JuJu Smith-Schuster looks as dangerous as he has all year, too, but it figured to be only a matter of time before he got it going.

USC coach Clay Helton talked this week about how he hoped making a change at quarterback – starting Sam Darnold in place of Max Browne – would provide the offense a spark. We'll never know how Browne would have fared against the Utes, but the offense looks good with Darnold running the show. The stats aren't necessarily that impressive – he was 10 of 17 for 130 yards in the first half – but Darnold is poised and in control.

USC RB Justin Davis got off to a slow start, with just 135 yards rushing in the first three games, but he's made up for it in the first half against Utah. He has six carries for 102 yards, including a 50-yard run and a 14-yard touchdown to put the Trojans up 14-10.

Here's USC's drive chart: -Fumble -Fumble -Fumble Take the turnovers out of the equation and the Trojans offense has actually been operating really well.

USC averaged 10.0 yards per play in the first quarter, but held the ball for just 2:33. Utah, meanwhile, averaged 5.1 yards per play, but ran 25 plays and held the ball for 12:27. The teams combined for three lost fumbles, which is the fourth time that has happened in a quarter in a FBS game this year.
