Pitt transfer joins Curry at Texas Tech

LUBBOCK, Texas -- Texas Tech coach Kristy Curry, who's in her first year in Lubbock after leaving the Purdue women's team, has signed Maddy Brown to a letter of intent.

Brown, who is transferring from Pittsburgh, will enroll at Texas Tech this fall but must sit out the 2006-07 season due to NCAA transfer rules.

"Maddy is a versatile left-handed guard that will provide experience and leadership on the perimeter," Curry said. "Having played a year in the Big East will definitely give us much needed experience as we lose three senior perimeter players as we prepare for the future. The year off will give her a chance to learn our system and improve her game."

Brown, a 5-foot-10 guard, played in all 33 games with 12 starts last season and averaged 22.9 minutes as a freshman at Pitt. The Honeoye Falls, N.Y., native averaged 7.2 points, 2.5 rebounds and 1.3 assists. Brown shot 34.8 percent from the field, connecting on 80 of 230 shot attempts, including 44 of 133 3-point attempts for 33.1 percent. She also recorded 27 steals.

The 2005 New York State Player of the Year, Brown led Honeoye Falls-Lima High School to a state championship. She averaged 24.6 points and 8.5 rebounds per game for the Cougars as a senior and 23.5 points, 12.4 rebounds and 4.0 assists as a junior. Brown finished her high school career with more than 2,000 points in four varsity seasons. She also earned numerous player of the year honors during her career.
