Last season's NCAA runner-up and the national champion from two years ago will clash in the sixth annual Jimmy V Women's Basketball Classic.
Rutgers will host Maryland at 7 p.m. ET on Dec. 3 in Piscataway, N.J. The Jimmy V Men's Basketball Classic will be played the following night on Dec. 4 at Madison Square Garden as Kansas State plays Notre Dame (7 p.m. ET) and Southern California faces Memphis (9 p.m. ET). The women's game will be broadcast on ESPN2. The men's doubleheader will air on ESPN.
Rutgers, which lost to Tennessee in last April's national championship game, hosts the event for the second consecutive season. Duke defeated the Scarlet Knights 85-45 in last year's matchup. Rutgers, under coach C. Vivian Stringer, then beat the Blue Devils, the No. 1 overall seed in last season's NCAA Tournament, 53-52, in the Elite Eight en route to Stringer's fourth Final Four appearance.
Maryland won the 2006 NCAA title.
Tickets for the Jimmy V Women's Basketball Classic will be available after Oct. 1 at the University of Rutgers ticket office (866-445-GORU or 4678).
Proceeds from each event will benefit The V Foundation for Cancer Research, which was founded in 1993 by ESPN and the late Jim Valvano, legendary NC State men's basketball coach and ESPN commentator. Since 1993, the Foundation has raised more than $60 million to fund cancer research grants nationwide.
