Connecticut picked up right where it left off last season: unanimous No. 1 in the women's preseason ESPN/USA Today Top 25 coaches' poll.
The defending national champion Huskies received all 31 first-place votes in the preseason poll. Four starters are returning from the team that went 39-0 last season, including player of the year and unanimous preseason All-American Maya Moore.
Since the 1989-90 season, the top team in the preseason has won the NCAA championship six times, including the Huskies last season.
"We tend to finish close to where we're picked," head coach Geno Auriemma said.
Stanford was second, followed by Ohio State, Baylor and North Carolina, which finished the 2008-09 season ranked 17th.
Duke was No. 6, with Notre Dame, Oklahoma, Tennessee and Michigan State rounding out the top 10. Arizona State was 11th, Florida State was No. 12 and Cal came in at 13th and Texas was 14th, followed by Xavier, Texas A&M, LSU, Virginia and Louisville, which was beaten by UConn in the national championship game.
Vanderbilt, Maryland, Pittsburgh, Purdue, Iowa State and DePaul finish off the top 25.
DePaul is one of five teams in the poll not ranked at the end of last season. The others are Notre Dame, Tennessee, Texas and LSU.
