Do Mets have any shot at the playoffs?

Here's the full quote from Terry Collins on the state of Neil Walker's herniated disk and the probability of surgery: "The issue is the herniated disk is causing weakness in one of his legs. The weakness is causing numbness in one of his feet," Collins said. "The numbness is keeping him from playing. So we are waiting for the second opinion to find out if surgery is necessary immediately? If not, are we waiting? How long? He's got to get some strength back in his leg in order to play. So, yes, he could play. But do we take him out in the sixth inning? The other night it flared up on him. We end up winning the game, and he said, 'I'm not sure I could have gone extra innings.' That is where we stand right now. Until the second opinion comes back, we are hesitant to put him out there."

Terry Collins said the Mets are still waiting on the second opinion on Neil Walker's lower back regarding whether he needs surgery. The herniated disk is causing weakness in a leg and numbness in a foot. Collins said the Mets do not want to put Walker in the lineup until the second opinion comes back, which should be soon. "It's been off and on all year," Collins said.

The Mets' Arizona Fall League with the Scottsdale Scorpions includes left-hander David Roseboom, right-hander Corey Taylor, catcher Tomas Nido, infielder Gavin Cecchini and outfielder Champ Stuart. Mets coach Tom Goodwin will manage the team, at least assuming the Mets are not busy in October.

Sandy Alderson is not dismissive of signing Tim Tebow. The Mets were one of 28 teams to monitor Tebow's workout on Tuesday at USC in Los Angeles. "We had a scout there, and we got a report back and understand there are some rough spots and deficiencies that you would expect from somebody that's been away from the game," Alderson said Wednesday. "We'll see where it goes."

The Mets confirm that Michael Conforto, Kevin Plawecki, Ty Kelly and Gabriel Ynoa will join the Mets on Thursday when rosters expand. More promotions will be made after Las Vegas' season ends on Monday, according to Sandy Alderson (although not the entire 40-man roster).

Sandy Alderson indicated that Steven Matz will get another medical opinion on Wednesday, but there are no plans to shut him down for the season.

Adam Rubin ESPN Staff Writer

Neil Walker has a herniated disk that is causing limited weakness in a foot -- similar to in 2012 with the Pirates. The initial medical opinion suggested he can play through the issue, but a second opinion is being sought to ease Walker's mind. Sandy Alderson said any report of Walker's issue being career-threatening would be inaccurate, and the Mets believe he could be back in the lineup shortly.
