Tanaka vs. Darvish lives up to hype

When Masahiro Tanaka pitched for the Rakuten Golden Eagles and Yu Darvish was with the Nippon Ham Fighters, they went head-to-head four times. Darvish went 2-1 with a 1.36 ERA in those meetings, and Tanaka went 1-3 with a 2.90 ERA. Both pitched well Friday, but Tanaka's Yankees were victorious in extras.

It took quite a while, but the Islanders finally found a trade for Travis Hamonic. He heads to the Flames along with a conditional fourth-round pick in 2019 or 2020, in exchange for Calgary's first- and second-round picks in 2018 and a conditional second-round pick in 2019 or 2020. The conditional picks will both be swapped in 2019 if the Flames do not make the playoffs; otherwise, they will be swapped in 2020.

Yankees manager Joe Girardi made it very apparent he had little use for first baseman Chris Carter. The Yankees have designated Carter for assignment, calling up Tyler Austin. Austin figures to see a lot of time at first until Greg Bird comes back. Bird (ankle) is hoping to begin a new rehab soon. Carter was hitting .204. The Yankees will owe him the remainder of his $3.5M.
