Gary Nova to start opener for Rutgers

Rutgers has named senior Gary Nova as its starting quarterback for the Aug. 28 season opener against Washington State in Seattle, the team announced Wednesday evening.

Nova has started 28 career games but lost his job late last year after a slew of interceptions. He was involved in a four-way battle for the starting position this offseason and emerged as the clear leader during spring practice. No other quarterback on the Scarlet Knights roster has FBS playing experience.

Rutgers, entering its first season in the Big Ten, hired noted quarterback guru Ralph Friedgen as its offensive coordinator in the offseason. One of his main early jobs was to help Nova, who has thrown for 6,407 yards and 51 touchdowns in his career but also has tossed 39 interceptions.
