NEW YORK -- A bruised right heel forced Derek Jeter to be a late scratch on Saturday, but Yankees manager Joe Girardi is hopeful that Jeter can return to the lineup on Sunday.
"His heel is sore," Girardi said after the Yankees beat the Mets, 5-3. "We'll see how he is on [Sunday]."
Jeter hurt the heel running to first base Friday night, according to Girardi.
Jeter was not scheduled to have any tests on the heel, Yankees spokesman Zillo said. Jeter did not talk to reporters.
Originally, Pena was slated to play third because Alex Rodriguez was the DH.
Brett Gardner moved to the top of the Yankees' order in place of Jeter.
