ATLANTA -- Former Cy Young Award winner Frank Viola was released from New York Presbyterian Hospital on Tuesday, six days after undergoing open-heart surgery.
Viola, 53, had a heart issue detected during his spring-training physical with the New York Mets. He had been slated to serve as Triple-A Las Vegas pitching coach.
Mets general manager Sandy Alderson recently said that Viola still hoped to serve in that role later this season, although doctors first would need to sign off.
Tom Signore is filling in as Las Vegas pitching coach.
