Pineda had to be shut down from throwing after feeling more discomfort in his lat muscle while playing catch Friday, Yankees manager Joe Girardi said. Girardi said that Pineda has had another MRI exam, and will be shut down "for a little bit."
The Yankees had originally hoped to have Pineda in their rotation sometime in June. He was 2-2 with a 1.83 ERA in four April starts, before he was ejected from an April 23 game against the Boston Red Sox for having pine tar on his neck.
Pineda was serving a 10-game suspension for that incident when the lat issue forced him to the disabled list.
"This was not the news we wanted," Girardi said. "But it's what we're dealing with. He's going to be shut down for a while."
