Source: Jon Niese nears extension

PORT ST. LUCIE, Fla. -- New York Mets left-hander Jon Niese, who is under the team's control for another four seasons, is expected to agree to a long-term deal with the organization, a baseball source told ESPNNewYork.com.

The eventual deal is believed to be comparable to the five-year, $28.5 million deal that included two team options -- for $11 million and $11.5 million -- that fellow left-hander Derek Holland signed with the Texas Rangers last month.

Both players have comparable major league service time and would have been eligible for free agency after the 2015 season.

The precise terms have not been agreed upon within that range, a major league source said, but there is an understanding of that benchmark.

Niese, 25, went 11-11 with a 4.40 ERA in 27 appearances (26 starts) for the Mets in 2011, before his season ended in late August with a muscle strain on his right side. The 11 wins marked a career high.
