Sabathia said he "felt good" after the throwing session before Friday's Yankees-Angels game. He faced hitters and sat down midway through to simulate resting between innings.
"No pain, no problems," Sabathia said. "I'll throw a bullpen on Sunday and I'll be ready to go."
Sabathia suffered a mild groin strain on June 24 against the Mets. He has missed two starts since but is on schedule to return to the mound Tuesday against Toronto.
He said he feels "fresh" after so much time off between starts.
"Hopefully, I can just keep going out and helping the team, putting together some good innings so we can win some games," he said.
Sabathia is 9-3 with a 3.45 ERA through 15 starts this season.
He was relieved to have missed just two starts.
"Anytime you're hurt, you never know; you always wonder if you're going to be 100 percent again," Sabathia said. "It felt good to be able to go out and throw a (bullpen session) on Tuesday, and to throw today and feel fine. I'm excited."
Sabathia doesn't anticipate operating under a pitch count on Tuesday but Joe Girardi said, "I wouldn't expect to throw him 110-115 (pitches)."
