David Wright's option exercised

The New York Mets have exercised third baseman David Wright's $16 million contract option, a major league source told ESPNNewYork.com's Adam Rubin.

The Mets had until three days after the World Series to exercise Wright's option.

The Mets are going to try to hammer out a long-term extension with the 29-year-old Wright. But a source said no deal is close and they chose to exercise the option while they continue to talk.

Wright, the face of the franchise, hit .306 with 21 homers and 93 RBIs en route to his sixth All-Star appearance.
