With runners on first and second, Manny Machado hit a sharp liner that second baseman Robinson Cano caught on a hop. He tossed it to shortstop Jayson Nix for the forceout. Nick Markakis, thinking the ball was going to be caught by Cano, got caught in a rundown between second and third base.
"That's one of the coolest things I've ever had on the field," Youkilis said. "You don't see one written up like that. It was special. This game we play, it's one of these games where it's a job and it's a grind at times. But when stuff like that happens, you feel like you're back playing Little League again."
The Yankees last turned a triple play on April 22, 2010, at Oakland. They hadn't accomplished the feat in the Bronx since June 3, 1968, against Minnesota.
