Matt Harvey undergoes surgery

NEW YORK -- All-Star pitcher Matt Harvey underwent Tommy John surgery on Tuesday in Gulf Breeze, Fla.

Dr. James Andrews performed the procedure on the New York Mets' right-hander, who will miss the 2014 season.

Harvey debated for weeks whether to undergo the procedure, before finally committing earlier this month. He originally was diagnosed in August with a partially torn ulnar collateral ligament in his right elbow.

Without Harvey, the Mets plan to add two starting pitchers from outside the organization to bolster a rotation that is expected to include left-hander Jonathon Niese and right-handers Zack Wheeler and Dillon Gee.
