Prince Amukamara not returning soon

The New York Giants could be without cornerback and first-round draft pick Prince Amukamara until the end of the month.

Amukamara is still recovering from a broken foot he suffered Aug. 6 in training camp. Coach Tom Coughlin told reporters to ask him about Amukamara after the team's bye week, which is in three weeks, between its game Oct. 16 against Buffalo and the Oct. 30 game against Miami.

Initially, Coughlin had hoped Amukamara would miss eight to 10 weeks. The eight-week mark for Amukamara was this past Saturday.

"I don't know what his original time frame was. Prince is not ready to go. He will not be for a while," Coughlin said. "We are not going to mess around here. Until he is ready to go ... I really don't ask about him every day because to me it is off somewhere in the distance. It's very slow, as you would imagine, but it is gradual and we are making progress. There is no setback."

"I'm just taking it day by day," Amukamara said. "This week felt a lot better than last week. I'm just happy I'm progressing."

Amukamara acknowledged that there is a lot of pressure put on his foot based on the movement required to play cornerback.

"You are constantly backpedaling and changing direction so of course you are going to have pressure and it is going to affect the foot a little bit," Amukamara said. "I have learned throughout this process just to be patient and not rush it and get out onto the field too early and re-injure it.

"The trainers are telling me to take it day by day and week by week and as long as the X-rays are looking good, which they are, and as long as I'm feeling good, I can be out on the field."

Linebacker Michael Boley and running back Brandon Jacobs were added to the Giants' pre-practice injury report with knee issues.

"At this point in time, their knees are a little bit swollen," Coughlin said. "It's a day-to-day thing. They are both scheduled to go tomorrow."

Boley said his injury is "nothing major" and that he plans to practice on Thursday.

"Wasn't that serious, just swelling and try to ice it and rehab it," Boley said. "Just hit it. Wasn't anything out of the ordinary. ... A little swelling, tightness, it's cool, sitting out today, give it a little rest, get the swelling down."

Center David Baas will not practice Wednesday due to a neck/burner injury. The Giants signed backup center Jim Cordle off their practice squad Tuesday in case Baas cannot play Sunday against the Seahawks.

Defensive end Justin Tuck (neck/groin) also will not practice as he tries to get the neck pain to "quiet down" by the weekend.

Defensive tackle Rocky Bernard (ribs) and defensive end Osi Umenyiora (knee) are expected to practice.

The Giants released cornerback Brian Williams Monday to make room on the 53-man roster for signing Cordle and cornerback Justin Tryon on Tuesday.

They terminated the contracts of wide receiver Brandon Stokley (quad) and quarterback Sage Rosenfels, who was on injured reserve.
