Hakeem Nicks taken off PUP list

ALBANY, NY -- Hakeem Nicks passed his physical Monday and the New York Giants announced that the wide receiver has been taken off the physically unable to perform list. Nicks had been recovering from a broken bone in his foot sustained on May 24.

"I'm very excited about that," Nicks told the Giants in a statement. "They're letting me know that by the beginning of next week I can start doing some stuff with the team; some individual and stuff like that. They still want me to take it slow and be smart about it. But I feel good about being out there progressing myself with the team slowly but surely."

Nicks will not be able to take part in any contact drills until he has sat out of three padded practices. He would not be available for the Saturday preseason game against the Jets. The receiver has said that he wants to be available for the team's opener against Dallas on Sept. 5.

"This is an indication that we're right where we should be," Nicks said. "We're on schedule. There have been no setbacks. Thank the Lord for that. I'm just going to take it one step at a time and be out there catching passes from Eli (Manning) and eventually getting our timing back."

Giants coach Tom Coughlin has expressed optimism as well.

"We're getting there," Coughlin said. "He wants to go. He's doing well enough in his drills. It'll be soon."

Nicks broke the fifth metatarsal on the second day of organized team activities while running a route and underwent surgery the following day.
