McGwire declines offer to join Cardinals coaching staff

ST. LOUIS -- St. Louis Cardinals manager Tony La Russa says
he asked newly retired slugger Mark McGwire if he wanted to be
a coach or spring training instructor. But Big Mac turned him down.

La Russa says McGwire, who announced his retirement last month,
is a bit disenchanted with the game right now and might care to
come back in a couple of years.

La Russa says he already misses McGwire, calling the slugger's
departure a big loss to the game. La Russa says he believes Big Mac
had quite a bit left.

La Russa also managed McGwire in Oakland.
