Yale 65, Columbia 54

NEW HAVEN, Conn. (AP) _ After using an 11-0 run at the end of
the first half to build a 20-point lead, Yale held on for a 65-54
victory over Columbia Friday night in the Ivy League opener for
both teams.
At 9-6, Yale is off to its best start in 10 seasons. The
Bulldogs held Columbia (7-7) scoreless for 5:47 and led by as many
as 22 in the second half and forced 22 turnovers.
Sophomore guard Scott Gaffield scored 10 to lead the way for
Yale. Junior Ime Archibong and freshman Alex Gamboa each chipped in
nine, sophomore Paul Vitelli had eight and sophomore Josh Hill had
a team high eight rebounds before fouling out of the game.
Senior forward Craig Austin had 15 points and seven rebounds to
lead Columbia. Joe Case was the only other Columbia player to score
in double digits with 11.
In his first game of the season after missing 14 games following
offseason shoulder surgery, Yale junior guard Chris Leanza scored
five in 17 minutes.
