Burke turns back Panthers in key third period

SUNRISE, Fla. (AP) -- Sean Burke was more concerned with
regaining his old form than beating his former team.

Burke made 41 saves and Radoslav Suchy snapped a 30-game
scoreless streak to lead the Phoenix Coyotes to a 3-1 victory over
the Florida Panthers on Wednesday night.

"I was hoping to get back to the way I was before," said
Burke, who returned Saturday after missing seven games with a groin
strain. "I felt I owed the team that. Obviously, the team played
well in front of me."

Burke, traded by the Panthers to Phoenix in 1999, withstood a
17-shot flurry and four power plays in the third period by his
former team. Phoenix extended its winning streak to three game and
won for the fifth time in six games.

"Sean was vintage Sean," Phoenix coach Bob Francis said as
Burke allowed less than two goals for the 24th time in 36 starts.

Florida pulled goalie Trevor Kidd three times in the final eight
minutes, including twice during power plays, to gain a two-skater
advantage. However, the Panthers failed to close the gap and
finished 1-for-7 with the man advantage.

"It worked pretty well for us," Florida coach Mike Keenan said
of pulling Kidd. "We had a number of great scoring chances. Sean
Burke played playoff hockey."

Roberto Luongo started in net for Florida and allowed three
goals before being lifted in favor of Kidd with 15:59 remaining.

Pavel Bure scored for Florida, which has lost four straight. The
Panthers are 1-7 in their last eight home games.

"(Burke) played well," said Bure, who had 10 shots on goal.
"We had a lot of chances, but we didn't finish off. So we can't be
satisfied."

Daniel Briere gave the Coyotes a 3-1 lead when his shot from the
right faceoff circle. The shot ricocheted out of the net and back
into play. The goal light did not light and play continued. The
play was reviewed at the next stop in play and Briere was credited
with his 20th goal of the season.

"It was a tough way to get it," Briere said of the delay. "I
couldn't celebrate, but I'll take it. It gave us a two-goal lead
and momentum going into the third."

In the first period, Suchy opened the scoring with a low slap
shot from the point at 2:54. Andrei Nazarov intercepted Bill
Lindsay's pass and centered the puck to Suchy.

Phoenix made it 2-0 at 12:18 of the first when Teppo Numminen
scored a power-play goal on a slap shot from the point that
ricocheted off Florida's Viktor Kozlov.

Bure closed the gap to 2-1 with a power-play goal at 14:37 of
the first.
