What's ahead for NL wild-card teams?

Every game matters for the Mets, Giants and Cardinals, who are all still tightly packed together in the standings. On paper, the Mets might have it easiest by ending their season against the struggling Phillies.

Sanchez ties record for 20 homers

It only took 51 games for Gary Sanchez to hit 20 home runs, tying him with Wally Berger, who accomplished the feat in 1930, for fewest games to reach that mark.

Time running out on Cardinals?

Although St. Louis won on Tuesday, so did New York and San Francisco, meaning the Cards' playoff chances look bleaker as the end of the season approaches.

Didi Gregorius quietly makes history

Gregorius hit his 20th home run of the season on Tuesday. He's the third player born in Europe (Amsterdam) to have a 20-homer season in the major leagues, per the Elias Sports Bureau. The others to do that were Bobby Thomson (born in Glasgow), who had eight 20-homer seasons, and Mike Blowers (West Germany), who did it once.

Just like his days at the University of Florida, Tim Tebow is still beating up on Vanderbilt athletes. This moment was storybook, too. On the first pitch of his first organized game since his junior year of high school, Tebow sent a 91 mph fastball over the left-center wall for a home run. After circling the bases, Tebow was greeted at the plate by his teammates, who had poured out of the dugout. Tebow had quietly taken those teenagers out to dinner Monday and to a movie on Tuesday after intrasquad games. The crowd, announced by the Mets at 269 for the instructional league game, also erupted as Tebow connected and circled the bases. The long ball came off 6-foot-5 left-hander John Kilichowski, who was drafted by the St. Louis Cardinals in the 11th round out of Vanderbilt University in June.

RB Shane Vereen had surgery on torn triceps. Normal recovery time is in 3-month range. That puts him well into December. Only chance at return appears late season or for playoff run.

Sox seeking first Yankee Stadium clinch

With the Red Sox a win away from clinching the AL East, the Elias Sports Bureau notes that they have never locked up a postseason berth with a win at Yankee Stadium. They did clinch the AL pennant in 1904 at Hilltop Park, the then-home of the Yankees, however.

It's the preseason, but the Knicks are already in midseason form when it comes to complaining about calls. Plenty of chirping at refs in their scrimmage today.

Porzingis and Carmelo's side beat Rose and Noah's team in a scrimmage that was clinched by two Porzingis free throws (after fouls drawn by Porzingis, who was guarded by Maurice Ndour). Derrick Rose wasn't happy about losing the game on free throws.

Here's a look at the Knicks scrimmaging. Rose, Noah & Lee are in one side. Porzingis & Melo are on the other:

Is Marcus Williams a star in the making?

Based on Bill Barnwell's research, he sure could be. On a per-snap basis, nobody has intercepted passes like Williams since the start of 2015, and his role is growing during a contract year. Small-sample-size studs
