The Mets' magic number to reach the postseason is down to three … and could be sliced further by the end of the night. James Loney and Jay Bruce produced two-run homers and the Mets beat the Marlins, 5-2, in Wednesday's rubber game at Marlins Park. The victory allowed the Mets (85-74) to open a one-game lead over the Giants and a two-game lead over the Cardinals pending the outcome of their games late Wednesday.

Jeff Hornacek wants to push the pace: "If we can get 5, 6 easy buckets a game just by pushing the ball, that's a big advantage." NYK ranked 30th in fast-break points/game (8) last year, per NBA.com. For what it's worth, 12 fast-break points/game would put a team in the middle of the pack last year.
