Naming of Doug Weight as interim coach is intended to send a message to their superstar captain that the New York Islanders are serious about winning.

This is an important time for the Islanders right now following the firing of coach Jack Capuano. Every move they make will be watched closely by captain John Tavares and if ownership is smart, he'll have a voice in some of the big decisions made in the organization moving forward. The Islanders should look hard at a new team president to oversee hockey operations, ideally one that gets Tavares excited about the vision of the team because right now there's not a lot to be excited about. Tavares can sign a contract extension on July 1 and be an unrestricted free agent following next season. If the Islanders lose Tavares, who has been extremely loyal to them so far, they're right back at square one.
Jorge Sedano and Kevin Pelton debate whether a split between Carmelo and the Knicks would serve to benefit both parties at this point in time.
ESPN Stats and Information
Islanders coach Jack Capuano became the second NHL coach fired during the 2016-17 season. The first was Gerard Gallant, sacked by the Panthers in November. If no more coaches are fired this regular season, this would tie for the fewest in-season firings in the last five seasons, matching the two from 2012-13 (the Sabres' Lindy Ruff and the Lightning's Guy Boucher). Four in-season firings in 2013-14 and in 2014-15 are the most in the last five seasons. Three teams changed coaches in-season in 2015-16: the Blue Jackets (who are currently second in the Eastern Conference in points), the Wild (first in the Western Conference in points) and the Penguins (last season's Stanley Cup champions).
