I'm hearing that Logan Verrett is likely to rejoin the Mets on Tuesday. That makes a ton of sense. After Rafael Montero threw 100 pitches on Monday, he's not of any use for several days. And there is really no immediate role for Montero anyway since he was just making a spot start for Jacob deGrom. Montero walked six but tossed five scoreless innings against the Marlins.

The Yankees, down 8-1 after 7 innings, fought back to bring the tying run to the plate in each of the last two innings, but PH Mark Teixeira grounded out to end the right hand Starlin Castro, who barely missed a three-run HR in the 8th, struck out to end the game with two men on. The Yankees lose, 8-5, to the Royals and more importantly, lose a chance to make up a game on three of the teams they were chasing in the AL wild card race.

Jose Reyes says he is fine from his plate collision. He adds that he's not surprised by his August success even though people wrote him off after he was released by the Rockies.

Asdrubal Cabrera said he had trouble running pregame and would have needed to depart for a pinch runner had he reached base as a pinch hitter in the seventh Monday. He figures the flare-up of the strained patellar tendon in his left knee will linger for the remainder the season. Cabrera said the discomfort had subsided until Sunday's first-inning collision at first base.

The Cardinals have rallied to beat the Brewers, so the Mets will remain 2.5 games behind St. Louis for the second wild-card spot. With Yoenis Cespdes' walk-off homer, the Mets did catch Miami in the standings.

Michael Pineda settled down after his bad first inning, throwing five hitless innings before surrendering hits to the first two batters he faced in the seventh. Both wound up scoring when reliever Blake Parker gave up a 3-run HR to Alcides Escobar. Pineda's final line-- 6+ IP, 7H, 5ER -- raised his ERA to 5.12 and put him in a position to drop to 6-11 for the season.

Asdrubal Cabrera's left knee was not feeling well enough to start, but he did pinch hit on Monday. Cabrera struck out in the seventh against Marlins reliever Kyle Barraclough. Cabrera, the reigning NL Player of the Week, had departed Sunday's game in the first inning with knee discomfort. He recently spent three weeks on the DL with a strained patellar tendon in that knee.

How much better a pitcher would Michael Pjneda be if all games started in the second inning? About a half-run better. Pineda, who allowed three first inning runs to the Kansas City Royals Monday night, has now allowed 22 earned runs in 26 first innings for a 6.84 ERA. Take that away and Pineda's overall ERA drops from 5.14 to 4.43. Start the game in the third inning and Pineda gets even better. Without the 17 runs he's allowed in 26 second innings (5.88) and Pineda's ERA plummets to a respectable 4.01.
