Red Sox manager John Farrell on Yankees GM Brian Cashman calling Boston "the Golden State Warriors of baseball" after acquiring Chris Sale: "It's going to be important for our guys to buy into us as a team; to understand that we are working towards a championship. That's going to require certain players accepting their roles. As long as their focus is what's best for our team first and not individual players we should be okay"

Shane Vereen is hoping to return Sunday night vs. the Cowboys. He's just waiting for the green light from the medical staff. Padded practice Thursday could be key.

After Brian Cashman called the Red Sox the "Golden State Warriors of baseball," I asked the GM what the Yankees were, "I don't know," Cashman said. "I couldn't tell you. If it is the NBA, we're in the pack of contenders looking to take Golden State down. That's a good question."

Is it time for Jets to fire Bowles? (1:59)

Rich Cimini ESPN Staff Writer

Jets coach Todd Bowles said he spoke to owner Woody Johnson today, just like he does the day after every game. Asked if Johnson was upset by the 41-10 loss, Bowles said, "Everybody in the building is upset."

Ryan Fitzpatrick will be the Jets' No. 2 QB for at least "a couple of weeks," per Todd Bowles. He said there's no plan to play rookie Christian Hackenberg. "Not unless Bryce (Petty) gets hurt," Bowles said. "I do not see him getting any playing time." He said it would be "a disservice to the kid" because Hackenberg hasn't had any practice reps other than scout team. Bowles didn't rule out the possibility of Hackenberg dressing for a game late in the year.

The Jets botched their QB change last night. Coach Todd Bowles admitted he never directly informed Ryan Fitzpatrick he was demoted. He said Fitzpatrick heard it from assistant coaches after the game. That's poor form. "I'd been meaning to tell him and I got tied up with a few things," Bowles said. Fitzpatrick appeared blindsided in his post-game presser. Asked if he could've handled it differently, Bowles said, "I probably could've and he tried to cover for me. Like I said, I had a lot on my mind and got some things off my chest." Meaning he was ripping the team in the locker room. Bowles said he will meet with Fitzpatrick tomorrow morning.

Jets coach Todd Bowles, who questioned the team's effort last night, changed his tune. He said the effort was better than he initially thought, but he said they made too many "boneheaded mistakes." Asked if he still has control of the locker room, Bowles said, "I don't believe I ever lost it." What makes him think that? "We had a bad game. We had a terrible game. That's without question. (The fans) have a right to think that, but I know what we have in this locker room and I know what we have in this building. So I'm OK with that."

The Mets' payout for reaching the postseason (and getting eliminated in a wild-card game) is $17,951.65 per share. The Mets awarded 51 full shares to players and other personnel, 12.75 partial shares and made five other cash awards. The champion Cubs earned $368,871.59 per share.

Jets coach Todd Bowles said today he decided two or three weeks ago to start Bryce Petty for the final four games. For weeks, he stuck with Ryan Fitzpatrick because he felt Fitzpatrick gave them the best chance to win. And now? "Just trying to win and just trying to see what I have at quarterback with Bryce," he said.

Courtney Lee will be available tonight against the Miami Heat after missing the past two games with an ankle injury, the Knicks say. With Lee back, Jeff Hornacek may have to juggle minutes between Lance Thomas and Justin Holliday in the Knicks' second unit. That's probably a good problem for Hornacek to have against an injury-depleted Heat team.

Yankees GM Brian Cashman calls the Red Sox "the Golden State Warriors of baseball" after Chris Sale trade.

One motivation for having Zack Wheeler begin 2017 in the bullpen is to shave innings early in the year. While there's no established innings cap as of yet, Sandy Alderson threw out 140-150 innings as potentially being appropriate for Wheeler next season after the right-hander missed two full years recovering from Tommy John surgery.

Giants hold steady overall in FPI

FPI didn't see the Giants as a top-10 team before Sunday's loss, so Big Blue stayed put at 18th overall. That said, the Giants fell in both offensive (three spots) and defensive (two spots) efficiency. Full FPI rankings

Although no official decision has been made, Sandy Alderson foresees Tim Tebow being assigned to minor league camp during spring training and occasionally being involved in a Grapefruit League game. Tebow then would be assigned to a full-season minor-league team in April. Terry Collins said he would welcome Tebow in major league camp, for the record.
