The Gary Sanchez Story continues to re-write itself. The 23-year-old Yankee rookie catcher has three hits in five innings against the Orioles tonight, including his 10th HR of the season, a 2-run shot that made it 12-1 Yankees. Sanchez' 10 HRs in a month -- actually 22 days so far -- is a Yankees rookie record. He is batting .408.

After Phil Jackson admitted passing on the chance to acquire Jae Crowder as his biggest regret in New York, Crowder used the location on his latest Instagram post to poke fun at the Knicks.

Victor Cruz practiced Friday wearing No. 3. It's the number he wore when introducing himself to the world vs. the Jets during the 2010 preseason. Cruz is scheduled to play his first game in 685 days on Saturday vs. the Jets. He admitted it means way more than a normal preseason game.

For the second time in club history, the Mets hit back-to-back home runs to start a game. José Reyes and Asdrubal Cabrera went deep. The only other instance was by Reyes and Ruben Gotay against the Reds in 2007. Amazingly, Gotay homered a few minutes before Reyes on Friday -- for the Long Island Ducks of the Atlantic League.

Yankees and Orioles trading HRs in the first inning, only Mark Teixeira's was a 2-run shot, negating Manny Machado's solo blast into Monument Park off Luis Cessa. Gary Sanchez -- who else? -- was on base (single) when Teixeira hit No. 11 into the Yankees bullpen. It was also Teixeira's 202nd HR as a Yankee, tying him with Hall of Famer Bill Dickey for 16th place on the team's all-time HR list.

There's only so much work to go around

With four QBs on the roster and 118 offensive snaps through two games, the Jets haven't found any work for rookie Christian Hackenberg. Meanwhile, Bryce Petty has out-repped the top two QBs combined.

It may just be temporary, but right now it appears that a pair of Yankees who are owed $60 million through 2018 have lost their everyday jobs to rookies. Already, Brian McCann's catching duties have been usurped by the red-hot Gary Sanchez, and tonight, Ronald Torreyes will start his sixth game out of the last 7 at third base, displacing Chase Headley. (Headley is DH-ing tonight in place of McCann, who has suffered a death in his family). Torreyes went 9-for-16 on the just-completed west coast trip and Joe Girardi said, "He was on fire on that trip, so we're playing the hot hand."

Cruz hasn't played in a regular-season game in more than 22 months. During that span, 23 different Giants have caught passes, including second-year O-lineman Ereck Flowers (whose grab went for an 11-yard loss).

Mets manager Terry Collins said he hadn't talked to GM Sandy Alderson yet but said "there's a pretty good chance" that Jacob deGrom will skip his next start. DeGrom has had rough outings against both the Giants and Cardinals in his last two starts. Alderson said the Mets studied TrackMan data and found some of DeGrom's pitches are lacking the movement they typically have. "When he's had time off, he's bounced back and been dominant," Collins said.
