New York Teams

A sneak preview for the Jets? Quite possibly. The Christian Hackenberg-led offense has gone three and out on its first three possessions -- no first downs. With no playmakers on the perimeter, the Jets are getting suffocated at the line of scrimmage. Get used to it.

In a surprise, Christian Hackenberg is starting at quarterback for the Jets. He took a lot of first-team reps in practice on Thursday, but Todd Bowles said he didn't anticipate any lineup changes. Bowles told CBS TV before the kickoff that Josh McCown won't play tonight. What does this mean? It means Hackenberg has a great opportunity to state his case for the starting job.

Chris Sale, who entered with 1.18 ERA in 13 career games vs. Yankees, gives up 3-run homer to Tyler Austin in the second inning. Yankees lead 3-0 behind CC Sabathia, making his return from disabled list after missing two starts with knee injury.

The Jets' starting offense: QB Christian Hackenberg , RB Bilal Powell, FB Julian Howsare, TE Austin Seferian-Jenkins, WR Robby Anderson and Jalin Marshall, OL Kelvin Beachum, James Carpenter, Wesley Johnson, Brian Winters and Brandon Shell.

Elate rallies for win in Alabama

Inactive tonight for the Jets: RB Matt Forte, WR Lucky Whitehead, WR Marquess Wilson, CB Xavier Coleman, LB Lorenzo Mauldin, LB Frank Beltre, WR Quincy Enunwa and WR Dan Williams. No surprises here.

A couple of challenges tonight for the Jets: The Lions play at a fast pace -- they used a lot of no-huddle last week -- so that will test the Jets' ability to communicate on defense and get lined up quickly. The offense will have to deal with crowd noise at Ford Field. It won't be regular-season loud, but it could put some stress on the offense. They practiced all week with artificial crowd noise.

Interesting answer to whether Giants are watching Hard Knocks since they play Bucs this year. Ben McAdoo: "We have a lot of HBO fans in the building ..."

Giants linebacker Keenan Robinson is back in the concussion protocol. Not good news. He's been dealing with this for weeks. Only returned to practice for a few days.

The injury rundown from Friday's practice: LB Keenan Robinson and G Adam Gettis left early. Did not practice: LB Mark Herzlich, WRs Dwayne Harris and Darius Powe. CB Eli Apple and LB J.T. Thomas limited.

In addition to Canaan Severin the Giants also signed WR Ed Eagan and waived WR Kevin Snead. Eagan is 5-10 and attended Northwestern State (LA).

The Giants are expected to sign former Steelers wide receiver Canaan Severin, per source. He'll take the roster spot of Keeon Johnson who broke his foot Thursday. They're former Virginia teammates. Severin caught 2 passes for 24 yards last week in the preseason opener against the Giants. He adds depth to a position that is dealing with a bunch of injuries. WRs Dwayne Harris, Darius Powe and Kevin Snead all didn't practice Thursday.

Jordan Raanan ESPN Staff Writer

Wide receiver Keeon Johnson had surgery on a broken foot suffered during Thursday's practice, per source. Expectation is he'll land on injured reserve. Johnson was an undrafted rookie with good size and speed having a solid camp. He was a strong practice squad candidate. Giants will likely fill his roster spot with another wide receiver.

Jets rookie report: WR ArDarius Stewart is off to a slow start in training camp, perhaps because he's still working his way into shape. Remember, he missed most of the offseason with groin and thumb injuries that required surgery. The Jets have high expectations for their third-round pick, but he hasn't stood out on the practice field. WR Chad Hansen (fourth round) has made more plays than Stewart. Today, he outmuscled CB Juston Burris on a 50-50 ball. In theory, Hansen and Stewart should be able to secure roles in this young and unproven receiving corps, but they'll need to rally.

Jets coach Todd Bowles didn't name his quarterback rotation for Saturday night, but the expectation is that Josh McCown and Christian Hackenberg will get most of the work. McCown and Hackenberg shared first-team reps today, as usual. Look for McCown to start. He played only nine snaps last week, so he needs work and continuity with the first-team offense.

Rich Cimini ESPN Staff Writer

Jets injury report: LB Lorenzo Mauldin aggravated a back injury, didn't practice and won't play Saturday night, per Todd Bowles. RB Matt Forte (hamstring) also won't play. RB Bilal Powell (neck), who has been practicing, will make his debut against the Lions. WR Quincy Enunwa (neck), out for the season, has opted for surgery. WR Daniel Williams (concussion) is out.

Christian Hackenberg gets the first QB reps in what is a game plan-oriented practice (game on Saturday). Interesting.

Rich Cimini ESPN Staff Writer

No practice again for Jets RB Matt Forte (hamstring), who has missed 2+ weeks. Obviously, he won't play Saturday.

Eli Apple has a minor ankle injury. Dwayne Harris has an upper body problem.

Jordan Raanan ESPN Staff Writer

Saw very little (maybe nothing) from Eli Apple at practice. Also: Mark Herzlich (stinger), WR Darius Powe (hamstring) and Dwayne Harris (n/a) among Giants that didn't practice.

Jets LB Lorenzo Mauldin appeared in a Manhattan courtroom Wednesday morning for his scheduled arraignment on a misdemeanor assault charge, but there was a delay because prosecutors weren't ready to file paperwork, according to reports. No new court date was set. Mauldin is accused of punching a 22-year-old Queens man in the face during a nightclub confrontation on April 2. After court in the morning, Mauldin returned to the Jets and practiced.

Jets DL Leonard Williams said the events of Charlottesville, and the aftermath, haven't come up in locker-room discussions. He shares a few thoughts on the issue.

Rich Cimini ESPN Staff Writer

Updating the Jets' QB competition: Presumptive starter Josh McCown got the bulk of the reps in practice. It was a solid day for McCown (37 reps), who completed 18 of 28 passes, with two touchdowns. He threw an interception on the final play of practice (Marcus Maye), a desperation throw with time running out. Christian Hackenberg (28 reps) was 10-for-19, with a touchdown and an interception. Bryce Petty (13 reps) was 7-for-11, with a touchdown. Bottom line: Not a whole lot has changed. We're almost three weeks into camp, and it's still McCown's job.
