Yankees sign top draft picks

New York inked its first-round pick Clarke Schmidt to a pro contract, the team announced Saturday. The right-hander and No. 16 overall selection out of South Carolina underwent Tommy John surgery in April after posting a 3.21 ERA during his three seasons at the collegiate level. The Yankees also finalized a contract with right-hander Matt Sauer, their second-round pick from Righetti High School in California.

Pittsburgh's Jamel Artis has agreed to a partially-guaranteed deal with the Knicks, according to his agent Daniel Hazan. Artis will join the club in summer league and will be with the team in training camp in the fall where he will have a chance to earn a roster spot. Artis, 6-7, exhibited a strong shooting touch from distance in his last season at Pittsburgh. He also scored 43 points in a game against Louisville last season. Nigel Hayes and Luke Kornet also have training camp deals. Canyon Barry will play with the Knicks' Summer League team with a chance to earn a training camp spot.
