Giants' 'strong conviction' on Barkley limited trade talk (1:12)

Rich Cimini ESPN Staff Writer

Sam Darnold spoke to incumbent QB Josh McCown during his recent visit to the Jets — the start of an important relationship. McCown will be a great mentor for Darnold.

Bill Barnwell ESPN Staff Writer

The Colts might very well have been choosing between Bradley Chubb and Quenton Nelson at three. In trading down with the Jets to six, they still managed to come away with a key protector for Andrew Luck and three additional second-round picks. With the Jets landing quarterback Sam Darnold, that deal could go down as a win-win.

Rich Cimini ESPN Staff Writer

The Jets shouldn't rush Sam Darnold into the lineup. He had only 24 college starts, he's only 20 years old and he needs reps. When he's ready, play him.

Jordan Raanan ESPN Staff Writer

The Giants has interest in No. 2 pick but had such a strong conviction in Barkley. Never really considered trading. Gettleman talked to teams but "not a lot." DG: "[Browns] took Mayfield, we were taking Barkley. End of discussion."

Yates: McCown will be 'perfect mentor' for Darnold (0:55)
Jets select Darnold No. 3 overall (0:39)

Rich Cimini ESPN Staff Writer

The Jets are ecstatic that Sam Darnold fell to them at 3. Until the Browns picked Baker Mayfield, they thought Darnold could go No. 1.

Jordan Raanan ESPN Staff Writer

Dave Gettleman: Giants thought Saquon Barkley was the "best player in the draft." He hadn't seen a player like this in 30 years.

Yates: Barkley takes pressure off Manning (0:58)

Tristan H. Cockcroft ESPN Senior Writer

No Giants running back in history has scored as many as 150 fantasy points in his rookie season. Saquon Barkley should get there and tack another 100-plus onto his 2018 tally.

The Jets have selected Sam Darnold with the third pick. They get the best QB in the draft. Has this star-crossed franchise uncrossed its stars?

Matt Bowen ESPN Staff Writer

Saquon Barkley brings upper-tier versatility and big play speed to the Giants offense. At 6-foot, 233 pounds with 4.40 speed, Barkley can handle high-volume touches in the run game and create matchups as a receiver out of the backfield.

Bill Barnwell ESPN Staff Writer

The Giants add Saquon Barkley to their stable of playmakers on offense alongside Odell Beckham and Evan Engram, where he should serve as the franchise back the team's lacked since Ahmad Bradshaw left town. It'll be interesting to see whether the Giants use Barkley on returns; usually, highly-drafted players who were devastating return men in college (like Reggie Bush) end up coming off return duties to help stay healthy in the pros. Now, will Dave Gettleman add offensive linemen to help block for his new star back?

Rich Cimini ESPN Staff Writer

So now it's Sam Darnold or Josh Rosen for the Jets. Darnold should be the choice. He's a better all around prospect than Rosen, but Rosen has support within the organization.

Jordan Raanan ESPN Staff Writer

The Giants take RB Saquon Barkley. No. 1 player on their board. Pass on Sam Darnold.

Rich Cimini ESPN Staff Writer

With Baker Mayfield off the board, the Jets will get Sam Darnold or Josh Rosen, the Hollywood QBs. It would be a mistake to trade up. Too costly.

Jordan Raanan ESPN Staff Writer

Baker Mayfield goes No. 1 to the Browns. Giants in a power position here with Sam Darnold on the board. Trade realistic here. Or take Darnold or Saquon Barkley. Or even Bradley Chubb.

Jordan Raanan ESPN Staff Writer

The Giants sitting at No. 2 have options. A lot depends on where the Browns go at No. 1. Saquon Barkley, Bradley Chubb and Sam Darnold the most likely options.

Rich Cimini ESPN Staff Writer

Latest buzz on the Jets: Good luck trying to predict the top of this draft. My sense is Sam Darnold and Josh Rosen are ahead of Baker Mayfield on the Jets' board. This surprises me because I had been hearing Mayfield for weeks.

Seth Walder ESPN Analytics

Despite the Big 12's reputation, Baker Mayfield faced stiffer competition than either Sam Darnold or Josh Rosen last year. The adjusted defensive QBR of Mayfield's opponents, weighted by his number of action plays against them, was 44.8 last season. By the same method, Darnold's and Rosen's opponents' defensive QBR were 47.4 and 50.9, respectively. The lower the defensive QBR, the better the defense is at stopping opposing quarterbacks.
