New York Teams

Christopher Johnson's pro-player comments on the NFL's new national-anthem policy might not be received well among fellow owners and CEOs, but they reinforced why he's so popular in the Jets' locker room. The players have a genuine respect for Johnson, who has devoted many hours of his time to listening and helping them in their fight for social justice. You may not agree with his stance, but the people under his employ — the players — believe he gets it. You wonder how older brother/owner Woody Johnson, who works for Donald Trump as the ambassador to the UK, would be handling this polarizing matter.

Sources: Knicks president Steve Mills, GM Scott Perry and director of scouting Kristian Petesic are at the Excel agency's Pro Day in NYC where Villanova's Mikal Bridges and other players who have signed with the agency are working out. All NBA teams likely have representation at the Excel Pro Day. But it's potentially noteworthy that Mills, Perry and Petesic were on hand to watch Bridges and other Excel players because many in the organization see Bridges as a potential option for New York, which has the ninth overall selection in the draft.

David Quinn is both the "outside the box" choice the Rangers said was possible, and an inevitability. He was always seen as an "NHL ready" coach in the NCAA, partially because of his three years as an AHL head coach and one year as an NHL assistant with the Colorado Avalanche. But partially because he's able to achieve that balancing act between coaching elite talent and developing young players. Plus the New York media should love his smart, charismatic personality. Good hire.

Jets CEO Christopher Johnson on the NFL's new national-anthem policy: "I plan to sit in the very near future with coach Bowles and our players to discuss today's decision regarding the national anthem. As I have in the past, I will support our players wherever we land as a team. Our focus is not on imposing any club rules, fines or restrictions. Instead we will continue to work closely with our players to constructively advance social justice issues that are important to us. I remain extremely proud of how we demonstrated unity last season as well as our players' commitment to strengthening our communities."

The All-NBA defensive teams were announced today. This won't come as a surprise but none of the Knicks received first or second-team votes from the panel of 100 media members which voted on the teams.

New York City native and Oklahoma City assistant Royal Ivey interviewed with the Knicks recently for an assistant position on David Fizdale's staff, per sources. Ivey has also received some interest from other teams, including the Philadelphia 76ers, per sources. Ivey played high school basketball at Cardozo HS under legendary high coach Ron Naclerio. The Atheltic earlier reported that the Knicks were considering Ivey as a staff addition.

Another sign that suggests the Knicks are high on 2017 first-round pick Frank Ntilikina: new head coach David Fizdale is traveling to Boston with Ntilikina to attend Game 5 of the Celtics-Cavs Eastern Conference Finals, a league source confirmed. Ntilikina, Emmanuel Mudiay, Trey Burke, Damyean Dotson, Isaiah Hicks and Troy Williams all worked out in front of Fizdale at the team facility earlier this week, which is fairly common for players staying in New York. Knicks management has been complimentary of Ntilikina in interviews recently. Ntilikina's presence will factor in to their decision to draft a point guard with the ninth overall pick. SNY.tv first reported Fizdale and Ntilikina's trip to Boston.

The Knicks are in advanced talks with Los Angeles Clippers assistant Pat Sullivan about an assistant role on David Fizdale's staff, per ESPN sources. Sullivan has coached with the Clippers for the past two seasons. Prior to that, he'd been an assistant in Washington, Detroit and with the then New Jersey Nets. Sullivan, a New Jersey native, coached in Detroit when Knicks GM Scott Perry was an executive with the club. As a player, he was a part of three Final Four teams at North Carolina. He also was an assistant coach for three Final Four teams at UNC. The Knicks are also in serious talks with Lakers assistant Jud Buechler, per sources, and are expected to add Memphis assistant Keith Smart as a top assistant to Fizdale.

Buechler has coached as an assistant under Luke Walton with the Lakers, where he worked in player development. A 12-year veteran, Buechler won three titles as a Chicago Bull for teams coached by ex-Knicks president Phil Jackson.
