Terry Collins says Robert Gsellman would be the logical choice to start Sunday against the Phillies, especially if Jon Niese lands on the disabled list because of his left knee discomfort.

Terry Collins expressed concern pregame about the status of Jon Niese's left knee. Well, Niese lasted only four batters -- allowing three to reach -- before departing with an escort from trainer Ray Ramirez on Tuesday at Busch Stadium. It matched the shortest start of Niese's career. He also lasted only one out at Texas on July 4, 2014, when he was struck in the lower back by a line drive. Robert Gsellman replaced Niese on Tuesday. It is Gsellman's MLB debut. The Mets chose not to use Monday's off day to skip Niese's start because of Steven Matz's shoulder issue and a determination Jacob deGrom could use extra rest.

The New York Mets come into this series in St. Louis trying to get more squarely in the wild-card race. They are 4 1/2 games behind the Cardinals for the second spot. Cardinals manager Mike Matheny isn't counting them out just yet.

Terry Collins says Jon Niese's left knee remains an issue. Robert Gsellman would step in if Niese has to depart Tuesday's game early.

Steven Matz (shoulder) is expected to return to the rotation next Tuesday, Terry Collins said. Seth Lugo starts for Matz on Thursday against the Cardinals. The Mets backdated Matz's DL stint, so he is eligible the next time his turn comes up.
