Here's a small bit of bad news for the Mets: Jose Fernandez, who had been scheduled to pitch Sunday against the Braves, instead will be given an extra day of rest and face the Mets in Monday's series opener at Marlins Park. Fernandez is 3-0 with a 1.34 ERA in eight career starts against the Mets. This year alone, Fernandez is 2-0 with a 1.08 ERA in four starts against the Mets. He's also been dominant in his career at Marlins Park, going 29-2 with a 1.49 ERA in 42 starts.

Terry Collins acknowledged it's probably a bullpen role or nothing for Steven Matz at this point. Matz was scratched from Friday's planned return because of continued shoulder discomfort. He has not appeared in a game since Aug. 14.

Wilmer Flores may be done for the season. He remains not close to being capable of swinging a bat. Flores injured his right wrist in a plate collision in Atlanta two weeks ago and has been diagnosed with a bone bruise. He since has received two cortisone shots.

Noah Syndergaard will throw a bullpen session at Citi Field on Saturday in an attempt to be ready for a start on Monday or Tuesday, according to Roger Rubin at Citi Field. Syndergaard originally had been scheduled to start Saturday, but was scratched due to strep throat.
