Lance Berkman came over from the Astros right before the trade deadline. While Berkman is not the player he once was, the Yankees envisioned him filling in for the injured Nick Johnson.

Berkman has improved as a left-handed swinger and will likely only start against right-handed starters. He almost single handedly won ALDS Game 2 for the Yanks, hitting a home run and driving in the game-winning run.
