The Knicks Are Born

Jun. 6, 1946: New York is granted a charter franchise in the first organizational meeting of the Basketball Association of America. Boston (Celtics), Philadelphia (Warriors), Providence (Steamrollers), Toronto (Huskies), Washington (Capitols), Chicago (Stags), Cleveland (Rebels), Detroit (Falcons), Pittsburgh (Ironmen) and St. Louis (Bombers) also get franchises. The Knicks play their first official game on Nov. 1, 1946, and their first home game on Nov. 11 of the same year. -- Ian Begley
