Steinbrenner's second ban from baseball (the first came following his illegal campaign contributions to Richard Nixon in 1972) came in 1990, after he hired gambler Howie Spira to dig up dirt on Winfield in an attempt to weasel out of making a yearly payment to Winfield's foundation stipulated in the slugger's contract. The relationship between the pair had been icy ever since The Boss had dubbed the future Hall of Famer "Mr. May" for his 1-for-22 performance in the 1981 World Series.
