Panthers coach Ron Rivera said guard Trai Turner (shoulder) is fine. He said Mike Scifres took a hard hit on the knee when the Patriots ran into the punter. Didn't express concern.

John Keim ESPN Staff Writer

Redskins corner Josh Norman played a strong game in a 21-16 win over Buffalo. Norman defended three passes and showed a lot of fire.

Panthers coach Ron Rivera on Cam Newton's performance. "Disappointing. We talked about it."

David Newton ESPN Staff Writer

Panthers coach Ron Rivera said "lower those passes, catch the ball and we're right where we want to be."

49ers starting wide receiver Bruce Ellington was just injured on a punt return. Ellington's body language, and the way Blaine Gabbert was talking to him on the sidelines, has me concerned that it might be long term. Right now Ellington is sitting on the bench with a towel over his head.

Panthers coach Ron Rivera said the loss to New England came down to "missed opportunities more than anything else." He cited them in all phases.

An interception by Saints rookie QB Garrett Grayson late in the fourth quarter. Grayson has been up and down all preseason. Maybe some signs of growth from last year, but he doesn't appear to be challenging Luke McCown for the backup job.

49ers QB Colin Kaepernick gets a first down on 12-yard completion to WR DeAndrew White but that's all for Niners offense on his first drive. Kaepernick goes 2-of-5 for 14 yards on his first series of the preseason.

Nick Wagoner ESPN Staff Writer

49ers QB Colin Kaepernick enters the game for Blaine Gabbert to open the second quarter. Gabbert handled first two series, leading the Niners to a touchdown on their second possession. This is Kaepernick's first appearance of the preseason and he does so with starting offense around him.

Like Letroy Guion, Aaron Ripkowski's knee injury that kept him out tonight vs. San Francisco is not believed serious. Week 1 not an issue, I'm told.

Rob Demovsky ESPN Staff Writer

Through one quarter and one play, Aaron Rodgers is 6-of-9 60 yards and one touchdown, a 6-yard swing pass to Randall Cobb. Rodgers played two series, and that might be it.

Mike Triplett ESPN Staff Writer

Saints rookie RB Daniel Lasco, who has had a strong summer as a runner and special teamer, left after absorbing a big helmet-to-helmet hit that drew a penalty against Steelers. Lasco eventually walked off on his own power after being assisted by trainers on the field.

David Newton ESPN Staff Writer

You don't hear Marcus Lucas in conversations for the fourth tight end, but he's had a pretty good last week and a half. That touchdown catch from third-string Panthers quarterback Joe Webb showed Lucas' skills as a former wide receiver.

David Newton ESPN Staff Writer

One other injury update for the Panthers. Undrafted rookie outside linebacker Jeremy Cash is being evaluated for a concussion.

David Newton ESPN Staff Writer

Panthers starting left guard Andrew Norwell has an ankle injury and right guard Trai Turner a shoulder injury. Not sure if they are serious.

David Newton ESPN Staff Writer

Cam Newton's night appears done. The Panthers quarterback finished 13-for-29 for 100 yards. Throw in the two interceptions and he had a passer rating of 25.1 after having a rating of 126.6 in the first two games.

The Panthers have bad breakdowns in all phases tonight, including special teams. A long punt return set up a short field for New England, which capitalized for a 16-3 lead. Ron Rivera will not be pleased.

Mike Reiss ESPN Staff Writer

With rookie QB Jacoby Brissett entering he game with 3;48 remaining in the third quarter, it should be the end of the night for both Jimmy Garoppolo and Tom Brady. Garoppolo started, played the first the series, gave way to Brady for four series, then played three more series (not including half-ending kneeldowns). In all, Garoppolo played 27 snaps and Brady 16. The Patriots didn't score with Garoppolo, and had nine points with Brady.

Mike Triplett ESPN Staff Writer

HALFTIME: STEELERS 21, SAINTS 7. The struggles continue for New Orleans' offensive line this preseason. The starters played the full first half (except for LT Terron Armstead, who had a couple rough moments himself before walking back to locker room with an unspecified ailment). They put one good drive together, but the others were pretty ugly. No sacks, but two holding penalties and an intentional grounding penalty. Also, top RB Mark Ingram ran for just 17 yards on seven carries.

Mike Rodak ESPN Staff Writer

Rex Ryan says it "looks like a stupid decision" to play Tyrod Taylor for two series tonight after the quarterback took two big hits early in the game. Taylor was one of the few Bills starters to play tonight in Washington.
