Research Notes

  • From Elias: This is just the 3rd time in NFL playoff history that all 4 winning QB in a playoff weekend had a passer rating over 100. Ben Roethlisberger, Mark Sanchez, Jay Cutler and Aaron Rodgers did it this weekend. In the 2007 Divisional Round, Brett Favre (GB vs SEA), Tom Brady (NE vs JAX), Philip Rivers (SD at IND) and Eli Manning (NYG at DAL) did it. It also happened in the 1982 Wild Card Round with David Woodley (MIA vs NE), Joe Theismann (WAS vs DET), Lynn Dickey (GB vs STL) and Dan Fouts (SD at PIT).Furthermore, it's just the 2nd time in NFL postseason history that all 4 winning QB didn't throw an interception in a single weekend. It also happened in the 2000 Divisional Round (see below).

  • NEXT-LEVEL: The Jets gained 66 yards on 17 rushes up the middle against the Patriots on Sunday. The 66 yards allowed was the third-highest in a game this season against New England, and was indicative of a pretty successful blueprint on how to beat the 2010 Patriots.

  • NEXT-LEVEL: The Patriots pass defense struggled all year sending extra pass rushers, and only did so on 26.2 pct of dropbacks in the regular season. On Sunday against Mark Sanchez and the Jets, the Patriots were very aggressive defensively, but the results were even worse.

  • NEXT-LEVEL: Among quarterbacks with at least 75 attempts, only Matt Ryan and Tom Brady did not throw an interception against a 3-4 defense during the regular season. On plays when the Jets used the 3-4 defense formation Sunday, Brady completed just 3-of-7 passes for a 28.6 passer rating, including his first interception since Week 6 against the Ravens.

  • NEXT-LEVEL: Rex Ryan's Jets have always focused on pressuring the quarterback - they led the league in added pressure last season (52.4 percent of snaps) and finished with the third-highest percentage (44.8) this season. The Jets were blitz-happy in the 2009 playoffs, and posted meager numbers when only sending the minimal pass rush of four or fewer players. In order to contain Peyton Manning and Tom Brady, Ryan has made a conscious decision to keep more men in pass coverage.

  • From Elias: The Jets are the first team in NFL history to get at least 2 road wins in consecutive postseasons.

  • Mark Sanchez is just the third quarterback to throw for 3 TD against Bill Belichick's Patriots in the postseason (since 2000). The others? Jake Delhomme and Donovan McNabb. Both Delhomme and McNabb did it in the Super Bowl.

  • Mark Sanchez ties a single-game postseason Jets franchise record with his 3rd Pass TD of the game. He is the 5th QB to do it, joining Chad Pennington, Vinny Testaverde, Pat Ryan and Joe Namath.

  • Tom Brady has two career postseason wins in which he was trailing at the half. The two times? 2001 Divisional Round against the Raiders and 2006 Divisional Round against the Chargers.

  • LaDainian Tomlinson: 7th career postseason TD, most among all active running backs.
