Research Notes

  • With their loss on Monday, the Bears now are 1-3 vs teams that CURRENTLY have a winning record. (Their lone win was Week 1 vs the Colts.)Chicago's 7 wins are against teams that are a combined 25-44-1. The Bears 3 losses are against teams (Packers, Texans, 49ers) that are a combined 23-6-1.

  • NEXT LEVEL: Colin Kaepernick was excellent when the Bears sent four or fewer pass rushers Monday, completing 10-of-14 passes for 143 yards and a touchdown. Kaepernick connected for two plays of at least 30 yards against a Bears defense that had allowed four such plays all seasons with such pressure.

  • Vernon Davis had a season-high eight targets Monday, five of which were on throws further than 10 yards downfield. Davis had three catches for 65 yards on such passes against the Bears, his most receptions on throws further than 10 yards downfield in the last two seasons.

  • The Bears allowed 94 rushing yards between the tackles Monday, 70 of which came in the first half. The Bears have now given up at least 80 yards on interior rushes in each of their last five games, after only one (Packers, Week 2) of their first five opponents rushed for more than 60 yards between the tackles.

  • The 49ers averaged 4.5 dropbacks per sack when sending four or fewer pass rushers Monday, their most effective four-man pass rush in the last five seasons. Aldon Smith had a career-high 5.5 sacks against the Bears, all of which came when sending four or fewer pass rushers. All of Smith's league-leading 15 sacks this season have come when the 49ers send standard pressure.

  • In his first NFL start, Colin Kaepernick completed more passes, had more passing yards and threw for more touchdowns than Joe Montana and Steve Young had in their first start with the 49ers COMBINED.

  • Colin Kaepernick had the best starting debut in terms of Total QBR by any player over the last 5 seasons.

  • Aldon Smith's 5.5 sacks are tied for 5th-most in a single game since sacks became an official statistic in 1982:

  • There was much discussion before the game about the 49ers lack of "impact & excellence" on defense. They had 6 sacks and 2 takeaways after a combined 8 sacks and 3 takeaways in their previous 4 games. Their offense also excelled, scoring 32 points after averaging half that in their previous 4 games.

  • Aldon Smith breaks the record for most sacks in a single game in Monday Night Football history:
