Research Notes

  • Joe Flacco completed two of his three passes thrown more than 10 yards downfield when targeting Anquan Boldin Sunday, including a fourth-quarter touchdown. During the 2012 postseason, Flacco is completing 64.3 percent of his passes more than 10 yards downfield to Boldin and 37.0 percent to all other receivers.

  • The Patriots sent five or more pass rushers on nine of Joe Flacco's 39 dropbacks Sunday, and Flacco had success against such pressure. Entering Sunday's game, the Patriots had a minus-3 touchdown-interception differential when sending added pressure over their last eight games (tied for the best in the league), while sending five or more pass rushers nearly 35 percent of the time with Aqib Talib active.

  • Despite having success with 2+ tight ends on the field Sunday, Brady took 82 percent of his second-half dropbacks out of 3-WR sets (42 percent in first half) and completed fewer than half of his passes with such sets in the game.

  • The Ravens batted four of Tom Brady's pass attempts, with one resulting in an interception in the fourth quarter. The four batted passes are the most Brady has had in a game during the past four seasons (including Playoffs).

  • NEXT LEVEL: The Ravens took advantage of Aqib Talib getting injured by using three wide receivers on 79.5 percent of Joe Flacco's dropbacks Sunday, their third-highest percentage this season (inc. playoffs). All 16 of Flacco's completions with that personnel came after Talib left, good for 176 yards and a career-high three touchdowns.

  • Tom Brady faced four or fewer pass rushers on 43-of-55 dropbacks (78.2 percent), completing 21-of-42 passes with both of his interceptions against such pressure. The Ravens have had success sending standard pressure against Brady over their last three postseason matchups, sending such pressure on nearly 80 percent of Brady's dropbacks, and limiting him to a -5 touchdown-to-interception differential.

  • The Patriots scored one touchdown on their four red zone possessions, including settling for a field goal to end the first half when they didn't take a timeout immediately after Tom Brady's scramble. Entering Sunday, they had scored touchdowns on 69.7 percent of their trips to the red zone, the highest percentage in the NFL. It was only the third game this season the Patriots scored a touchdown on less than half of their red zone possessions - all losses.

  • Both home teams jumped out to 1st-half leads on Sunday but neither one was able to hold on, getting shut out and combining to turn the ball over 5 times in the 2nd half.

  • Tom Brady now has a 67-1 record in home games in which the Patriots had a halftime lead. The earlier discrepancy had to do with the game where he injured his knee in 2008. He left the game in the 1st quarter, but he started the game, and is therefore credited with a win (in a game the team led at halftime).

  • The Ravens loosened the reins on Joe Flacco in this postseason and are in the Super Bowl because of it. And he hasn't thrown an interception yet in these playoffs.
