Ravens survive Niners' rally to win Super Bowl

A power outage at the Super Bowl put the nation's biggest sporting event on hold for more than a half-hour Sunday, interrupting an otherwise electric game that ended with Joe Flacco and the Ravens as NFL champions thanks to a 34-31 victory over the 49ers.

Research Notes

  • Over the last 5 NFL postseasons (55 games), officials have thrown only 2 flags for defensive holding or defensive pass interference in the last 2 minutes of a game.In the 2010 Division Game, the Ravens (T. Cody) received a defensive holding penalty with 1:55 remaining against the Steelers.Earlier this postseason, the 49ers (T. Brown) received a defensive pass interference penalty with 1:17 remaining against the Packers.

  • The 49ers chances to win the game decreased to just 1.9% (their lowest of the game) 3 plays after play resumed from the power outage.

  • From Elias: Joe Flacco became the 3rd quarterback in NFL history to win the Super Bowl without making a Pro Bowl in his career, a list that includes Doug Williams and Jim Plunkett (twice). All 3 players won the Super Bowl MVP award.

  • NEXT LEVEL: Colin Kaepernick's lone interception came on an overthrow when targeting Randy Moss. Kaepernick threw three interceptions on 43 passes when throwing in Moss' direction this season (interception every 14.3 attempts). When targeting his other receivers, Kaepernick threw two interceptions on 241 attempts (interception every 120.5 attempts).

  • On Colin Kaepernick's 15-yard touchdown scramble in the fourth quarter, the Ravens sent seven pass rushers. Including that play, the 49ers had gained 82 yards on six dropbacks against five or more pass rushers. The Ravens wouldn't be deterred, however, and brought such pressure three more times the rest of the game: the two-point conversion attempt, and the 49ers last two plays of the game, all incomplete passes.

  • NEXT LEVEL: Joe Flacco completed 13-of-21 passes for 197 yards and two touchdowns when facing four or fewer pass rushers. The 49ers standard pass rush was significantly worse after Justin Smith suffered a triceps injury in Week 15 against the Patriots, allowing three more touchdowns with such pressure, despite facing nearly 300 fewer pass attempts (288).

  • Anquan Boldin caught 4-of-4 passes thrown into the end zone during the postseason, including a 13-yard touchdown reception to open the scoring. He caught 3-of-10 end zone targets during the regular season.

  • NEXT LEVEL: Jacoby Jones scored on a 56-yard reception with 1:45 left in the second quarter, giving the Ravens a 21-3 lead. The pass traveled 47 yards downfield, giving him two touchdowns this postseason on throws at least 40 yards downfield. He is the first player since Larry Fitzgerald in 2008 to score two touchdowns on such passes in a single postseason.

  • Joe Flacco completed 7-of-10 third down passes for 158 yards and two touchdowns, including 4-of-4 and a touchdown targeting Anquan Boldin. Boldin entered the game with just one third-down touchdown reception in 105 career third-down targets with the Ravens.

  • NEXT LEVEL: Michael Crabtree was targeted on the 49ers' last three plays (all incompletions). He caught five of the seven passes thrown his way prior to that. Crabtree did not catch any of his three end-zone targets on Sunday after being targeted only six times in his first 18 games.

  • NEXT LEVEL: Colin Kaepernick was 0-for-4 on passes thrown into the end zone in the game and 1-for-8 on such throws in the postseason. Six of the seven incompletions were the result of overthrown passes. Kaepernick also missed Randy Moss in the end zone on the two-point conversion attempt which would have tied the game at 31.

  • The 49ers dropped back to pass on seven of their 11 plays inside the 10 yard line including a two-point conversion attempt. Kaepernick was 0-for-5 with two sacks including the two-point conversion. They scored one touchdown on those 10 plays, and totaled -2 yards. Entering the game, the 49ers had called running plays on 70.4 percent of their plays inside the 10, the highest rate in the NFL.

  • NEXT LEVEL: Michael Crabtree and Vernon Davis each had more than 100 receiving yards, the first time they both reached such totals in the same game since Week 5 with Alex Smith starting at quarterback. Sunday was the first time they each had at least three receptions on passes traveling more than 10 yards downfield in the same game.

  • The Superdome lost power with 13:22 left in the third quarter, resulting in a 34-minute delay. Before the outage, Colin Kaepernick was 10-for-15 for 174 yards and an interception. Once the power came back, Kaepernick led three touchdown drives over the last 28:22, completing 6-of-13 passes for 128 yards and a touchdown and rushing five times for 46 yards and another touchdown.

  • Including the Super Bowl, the 49ers allowed five touchdowns and a 67.5 completion percentage on passes more than 10 yards downfield in the postseason. In the regular season, the 49ers allowed only three touchdowns (fewest) on those throws and 38.7 completion percentage (third-best).

  • Joe Flacco was 7-of-13 for 171 yards and two touchdowns on passes deeper than 10 yards downfield in Super Bowl XVLII. Flacco struggled on those throws in the regular season, posting the second-worst completion percentage (41.1 percent) but found his touch in the postseason.

  • Joe Flacco finished with a Total QBR of 95.1, tied for the 2nd-best single-game Total QBR of his career. The only game better was a 97.1 in Week 17 of the 2008 season against the Jaguars.
