Research Notes

  • Geno Smith's QBR jumped from 29 in the 1st half Sunday to a 69 in the 2nd half. It was the largest increase by a rookie in a season opener over the last 5 seasons.

  • Geno Smith joined Mark Sanchez as the only Jets rookie QBs to start a season opener and the two had pretty similar performances. Each threw for more than 250 yards with both a touchdown and interception and each led New York to victory, Smith in dramatic fashion.

  • Geno Smith had a Total QBR of 48.5 Sunday but was most effective in the 4th quarter. Smith's QBR was 76.0 in the final quarter against the Buccaneers, the 4th-highest Total QBR in the 4th quarter by a Jets quarterback since the start of last season.

  • A 15-yard personal foul on Buccaneers' linebacker Lavonte David put the Jets in position to kick a game-winning 48-yard field goal on Sunday. That flag was no isolated incident- the Jets' offense had five first downs as a result of Tampa Bay penalties, tied for the second most by a Buccaneers defense since the start of 2001.

  • Darrelle Revis broke up a pair of passes in his Buccaneers' debut Sunday against the Jets. Revis broke up multiple passes in a game eight times in his last three seasons with the Jets.

  • Geno Smith threw for 256 yards in his debut and was off-target on only four of 38 pass attempts (11%). Last season, Mark Sanchez missed on 22% of throws, fourth highest among qualified quarterbacks, and topped 250 pass yards in five of his 15 games. Smith was an improvement on Sanchez from last year, especially handling standard pressure.

  • According to Elias Sports Bureau, this is the 1st season that NFL's Week 1 has had 3+ safeties since 1999.
