Research Notes

  • The Chargers converted a 4th and 2 at their own 28 with the game tied in overtime on a fake punt. If they had not converted and been stopped for no gain, the Chiefs would have the ball at the Chargers 28 needing a field goal to win. The Chargers win probability at that point would have dropped to 19.1%.Since 2008, NFL teams have converted 18-of-27 fake punts (66.7%), and 6-of-7 4th-down fake punts needing 2 or fewer yards.

  • The Chiefs entered the day with the second-best completion percentage allowed outside the painted field numbers, but the Chiefs' backups allowed Philip Rivers to go 10-of-14 with three touchdowns Sunday. Rivers didn't start to take advantage of this weakness until late, with 11 of his 14 attempts coming in the second half or overtime.

  • Ryan Mathews gained a season-high 58 rush yards after contact Sunday, en route to his sixth 100-yard rushing game. LeSean McCoy is the only other running back this season to record six 100-yard games (had six entering Sunday night).

  • The Chargers attempted a fake punt at their own 28-yard line in overtime Sunday and converted. No team had attempted a fake punt from a deeper starting point this season entering the week. The Rams attempted a fake at their own 38-yard line in Week 3.
